Saving energy in Mississippi get easier as fall approaches. Days and nights get cooler, windows and doors are opened, and grilling outside is much more tolerable than in summer.  Saving energy might not be top-of-mind in fall, but it is one of the best times in Mississippi to save a ton on energy. Here are a few good fall energy saving tips.
Use a programmable thermostat – Program the heat to come on when you’re home and to turn off when you are not home. For each degree you drop the temperature you can be cutting 2% off your energy use for the heater.

Fixing air leaks, drafts, and poor insulation can be another source of energy savings. Every fall run an inspection and repair any areas that might be creating an issue. Fixing air leaks can save you 10% and insulating the attic door if you have one can save you 15% of the energy cost caused by the loss.

Clean your refrigerator and dryer. These are two high draw items. If you keep lint traps and coils cleaned out, you can increase the efficiency of these items. Fixing these items can save you 30% of the energy they use.
Change light bulbs – When the time changes, nights get longer and the portion of your energy use dedicated to lighting increases. If you are not already using compact florescent bulbs consider putting them in. They last longer than standard incandescent light bulbs and they use 30% less energy.

Lower the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees. You’ll save 3-5% on your energy bill for every ten degrees you drop water temperatures. Consider insulating your water heater and exposed pipes. This can help reduce heat loss that makes your water heater work harder.
Have your heating system checked out every fall to be sure it is in optimal condition. Efficient systems are more economical and will save you money in the long run.

While it’s just the right temperature outside, enjoy the fall air when you can, give your AC a much-needed break and use that extra saving for holiday treats.
